It’s a dark day in Kwara as a 67-year-old man, by name Abraham Olayinka, was rescued after he jumped into Asa River on Abdulwahab Folawiyo, Unity Road, Ilorin, Kwara State.
As he jumped, Traders who witnessed his unwise act of seeing him jump drew the attention of people and security men around the area to the incident.
The victim was rescued from the river.
Speaking on this matter, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle opine that the suicide was rescued before the government agency called could intervene and praised those who helped in saving the victim’s life.
He, however, said the sexagenarian when brought out of the water took some minutes before he could be revived and when he was revived and taken to a hospital where he was stabilised.
Adekunle said the victim refused to state the reason for attempting suicide despite the pressure mounted on him by the fire service.
Meanwhile, some onlookers who were also residents there reported that Olayinka recently lamented about losing N30,000 to some thieves and that the money belonged to a friend.
A commercial motorcyclist who rescued him, Abubakar, said, “I was riding along this area when I saw people gathering around the river bridge. I decided to stop to see what was actually going on, and I was told the old man jumped into the river and there was nobody to help him. The incident occurred around 11.30 am on Monday.
