FG RESTATES SUPPORT FOR OKONJO IWELA TO EMERGE AS THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION.
The FG restated its support to ensure that Ngozi Okonjo Iwela becomes the Director-General of the World Trade Organization. The ministry of foreign affairs said in a press release made by Ferdinand Nwonye said that Nigeria will continue to engage relevant stakeholders to ensure that one of her own emerges as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization. The ministry noted that the former MG of the world bank has gotten the support of the majority of the WTO members, with only the United States opposing her.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of Lagos Chamber of Commerce, Muda Yusuf, has shown confidence that the former Minister of finance Mrs Ngozi Okonjo Iwela would emerge the DG of world trade organization regardless of the oppositions from the United States.
Muda Yusuf in an interview stated that the candidature and global personality of Ngozi Iwela is not in doubt adding that Nigeria and Africa would be of benefit if she succeeds.
The statement further goes on to say:
“The ministry of foreign affairs wishes to inform that the third and final round of the selection process of the Director-General of the World Trade Organization was concluded on Tuesday, 27th October 2020, and the result was formally announced on Wednesday, 28th October 2020.”
“The candidate from Nigeria, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has secured the support of the majority of the member countries but is yet to be declared and returned the winner. This is because apart from winning the election, all the 164 Member States of WTO were expected to adopt the winner by consensus, in accordance with the rule of procedure of the WTO.”
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala twice served as Nigeria’s finance minister and is chair of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.
Happy for the success & continued progress of our @wto DG bid. Very humbled to be declared the candidate with the largest, broadest support among members & most likely to attract consensus. We move on to the next step on Nov 9, despite hiccups. We're keeping the positivity going!
